Before you start
Woodshelf needs an Audiobookshelf server to connect to. It is free, open-source software that you or a friend run on a home server, a NAS or a small cloud machine; it holds the audiobooks and keeps track of everyone's progress. Woodshelf signs in with the same username and password you use on the Audiobookshelf web page.
Common questions
What do I type in the Server field?
The address you use in a browser, for example https://books.example.com or http://192.168.1.20:13378. Leave off any path after the host. If you reach your server through a VPN or Tailscale, connect that first.
Sign-in says wrong username or password, but they work on the web.
Check the server address first; a typo there gives the same message. If your server uses single sign-on (OpenID), the app currently needs a local account instead.
How do downloads work?
Tap Download on a book to store the whole thing. By default the app also quietly caches the rest of any book you stream, so the next listen is local. Downloads wait for Wi-Fi unless you turn that off in Settings. Finished books are removed from the phone after a week unless you change that.
Does progress sync back to the server?
Yes, every few seconds while playing when online, and queued for later when offline. The web client and other apps see the same position.
CarPlay shows nothing, or an older screen.
Open Woodshelf once on the phone after installing or updating; iOS only lists CarPlay apps that have been launched. If the car shows a stale list, unplug and reconnect the phone.
Can I search in CarPlay?
Apple does not allow audio apps a keyboard in CarPlay. Use the letter index on the Library tab, the Series tab, or the Continue tab for what you were listening to. Voice search through Siri is planned.
The app jumped back a bit when I pressed play.
That is smart rewind: the longer the pause, the further back it goes, up to thirty seconds. Turn it off in Settings if you prefer.
Where are stats and badges?
Settings, then Stats. They use the same rules as the badges on the web client, so the two agree.
How do I remove everything?
Sign out in Settings to clear your credentials, or delete the app to remove downloads and the local copy of your library. Nothing is stored anywhere else.
Reporting a crash
If the app crashes, the fastest route is TestFlight: open TestFlight, choose Woodshelf, tap Send Beta Feedback and include what you were doing. The crash log is attached automatically. Or email us with the time it happened and your phone model.
Beta status
Woodshelf is in private beta through TestFlight and is not on the App Store. Builds expire after 90 days; TestFlight tells you when a new one is available. See Join the beta.
